Adult Basic Skills

The Adult Basic Skills Program is based on the philosophy that every student, regardless of functional level, is teachable, capable of self-improvement, and should have the opportunity to participate in continuing educational activities. The program is designed to assist the student in improving his/her reading, writing and math skills. An additional goal of instruction is to prepare the student to be successful in the General Educational Development (GED) Program. All classes are offered free and instructional materials are provided.

Any adult 18 years of age or older who did not graduate from high school is eligible to participate in the Basic Skills Program. A high school graduate who wishes to up-grade his/her skills may enroll in the Basic Skills Program. Any adult ages 16 or 17 not currently enrolled in public school may participate by obtaining permission from the school superintendent and the principal of the school district where he/she lives.

The Adult Basic Skills Lab on the main campus is located in the Crisp Building, Room 102. The lab is open on a regular basis and allows students to select the days and hours they would like to attend. There is also an Adult Basic Skills Lab at the Graham County Center in Robbinsville (479-9256). Please check for lab times.
GED

The GED preparation course is designed to prepare the student to successfully complete the Tests of General Educational Development or the test for a High School Equivalency Diploma. The students study for and take practice tests in all five areas of the GED. The five disciplines required are Writing Skills, Social Studies, Science, Reading, and Mathematics. The test questions are multiple choice, writing an essay, and alternate formatting.

The GED Test is administered on campus and is open to North Carolina Residents 18 years of age or older who did not graduate from high school. Persons wishing to take the test must pre-register with the Continuing Education Department. Pre-registration includes an evaluation of skills. At test time the examinee must present two forms of identification (one must have a picture such as a driver's license) and pay the testing fee of $7.50.
